Pilgrim Mission Projects:

It is our hope to inspire our members with a sense of service to others by supporting a variety of mission projects. The projects have ranged from World Wide Mission such as Blanket Sunday, Crop Walk, Heifer Project International and One Great Hour of Sharing to local mission projects such as donations to Catholic Charities' food pantry, serving at Safe Harbor soup kitchen, donating to the local women's shelter, visiting Warren Acres juvenile detention facility at Christmas, providing gifts to local underprivileged youth at Christmas, offering meals to the home bound through Meals on Wheels, meal preparation for members returning home from the hospital and bringing fruit baskets to shut-ins for Thanksgiving. The Youth Group has focused on a number of mission projects throughout the year, and, most recently, participated in "Rock 'N Bowl" for Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Warren County, Souper Bowl of Caring (with proceeds donated to the Catholic Charities of Phillipsburg), and Camp Johnsonburg. Our doors have been open to various groups such as AA, Angel Helpers, the Hillcrest Camera Club, Sunny Seniors, and Overeaters Anonymous. We have had a long-standing sponsorship of a Boy Scout Troop, which takes an active part in the life of the church. As advocates of peace and social justice for the people of our community, we recently offered a presentation of the "Yellow Dress," a dramatic presentation of the dangers and complexities within relationships, especially teen dating. As care takers of the earth, our youth have made a number of trips to Camp Johnsonburg to rejuvenate the grounds for the coming year.

Pilgrim's Mission Statement 2000:

We see the Mission Statement as an expression of Christ's example to us all. As Christ challenges us, excites us, and is constantly changing us, so does and will the Mission Statement.

"We gather in Christ-centered worship;
We grow as a community in faith, hope and love;
We go into the world as Christ's disciples in service to others."

Pilgrim's "Gather, Grow, and Go" mission statement sums up our basic theology. This mission statement was based on the example that Jesus gave us when he gathered his disciples and other believers together to share the Word of God with them allowing them to grow spiritually and then told them to go out into the world and spread the Good News. Pilgrim strives to follow in Christ's footsteps.

We gather in Christ-centered worship that invites our community into the presence of God, and offers spiritual healing, renewal, and transformation. The central acts of worship being the proclamation of the Gospel and prayer. We strive to be a welcoming, inter-generational, and inclusive community of faith, who reach out to people on different levels with a variety of worship forms.

We grow as a community in faith, hope, and love through creative Christian education for all ages, abilities and faith levels. We commit ourselves to encouraging and expecting members to develop and share their faith and to empowering Pilgrims to use their time, talents, and financial gifts in service to God. We encourage nurturing and supportive leaders who can shepherd the church through challenges and change to achieve spiritual growth. Together we celebrate each other's similarities and differences in Christian fellowship.

We go into the world, living as Christ's disciples in service to others, reaching out with acts of compassion and mercy to the poor, the hurting and those with special needs. We invite others to experience the love of God and the fellowship of our church. As a community we demonstrate the unity of the body of Christ through ecumenical mission and support of community service groups. Being advocates of peace and justice for the peoples of the world, we are committed to education and involving ourselves in global mission recognizing our role as stewards of the Earth.

Pilgrim Mission Study 2004:

A mission study was conducted by Pilgrim Presbyterian Church in Phillipsburg, NJ as an interim step in the process of selecting a new pastor. The Committee on Ministry of the Newton Presbytery met with Session on November 10, 2003 to discuss the purpose and process to be followed in updating the Mission Study. Elder Shawn Cahill was chosen to chair the committee. The committee members were Susan Grassi, Nicole Leist, Kenneth Maze, Debra McGuinness, and Shawn Cahill. The committee began to meet in December 2003 and continued its work through May 2004. The Mission Study Committee met at 7pm on Tuesday nights in the church conference room.

The committee's membership was made up of a representative cross section of our congregation i.e., its members were officers and laity, male and female, and age ranges from late teens to 30's, 40's, 50's, and 60's. There were a new member of the church, a recently confirmed member, life-time members, and those that came from other churches over the years. Some members had younger children in the church, some had older children, and some had no children. Their marital status was either single or married.

This Mission Study is separated into four sections; 1) Mission Statement (in order to study Pilgrim's mission, we must first understand our Mission Statement), 2) Congregational Survey, 3) Community Survey, and 4) Master Site Plan. It is important for us as a congregation to accept the past and understand the present, in order to plan for the future.
