Schriefer Unified Theory© SERIES
Recommendations of structural engineering books and software for engineers and students.
Every engineer responsible for designing structural components and systems needs comprehensive references dose at hand. In addition, the structural engineer needs references containing simplified cases of broad and deep theory to expedite the design process as long as the comprehensive references are not ignored. Finally, the structural engineer needs a collection of straight-forward sample problems with illustrative solution methods.
Why does every structural engineer need such a collection of resources? Because, just as in law or medicine, the engineer often must point to accepted precedent; even though he/she knows what is correct. It's efficient to point to an accepted reference to prove a point than it is to incessantly debate. If every step along the way, the structural engineer can point to independent accepted practice, challenges to methods are handily put to rest.
The books listed here provide a spectrum of knowledge and resources for the structural engineer to analyze and design the majority of projects which may be encountered. For new structural engineers, these books are a must. For established structural engineers, some these books will round out a handy resource collection.

| RECOMMENDED SOFTWARE | ||
|
Mathcad 6 Plus Professional
|
Like a virtual blackboard inside your computer. Define your variables. Write your equations and relationships. Get immediate results. Change your variable values and get a new solution instantly. Does all arithmetic, algebra, trigonometry, calculus, differential equations, vectors, matrices, and more. Then it graphs in many formats two or three dimensionally. Keeps track of units. Wouldn't want to calculate any other way! |

|
Mathcad 2001 Professional

Same as above - only BIGGER, BETTER, and NEWER. I don't work without it! |

I have found that these books provide the basis to build my own customized interactive analysis/design routines in MathCAD software, for producing irrefutable "manual calculations", complete with respected references. MathCAD also "proves" the logic and associated computations, which I broaden and generalize in large-scale MS Excel worksheets, with built-in look-up tables, formulae, and more for what-if evaluations.
For an engineer who experienced the transition from thumb tacks to masking tape on drawing boards; and, used a K&E Deci-Lon 10 slide rule in college and early employment, such resources and software as shown here is amazing. Hope these resources give you as much as they've given me.
