ACTIVE DUTY CALL ONCE AGAIN 1968 This time it is to Ft. Benning Ga. What started out to be another call to active duty for the 1/211th Artillery, ended up with the unit being split up, with men going to Viet Nam and others remaining behind. How or in what way the transfers were decided, seems unknown. Because this person was not included in the call and remained home, this will be the stories as reported by others.
Jonathan Chace reports;
The call up was like the last one in 1961, except it was at Fort Benning, Ga. Once there we started to take our ATTs, and again,"no National Guard unit is going to pass the first time around and make the regulars look bad" seemed to be the reason why we didn't pass, Because of conflicts with the limited training areas, The Fort Benning Infantry School had priority, and so we convoyed to Camp Shelby, Mississippi for more training and evaluation. The National Guard had just finished their summer training, so the 1/211th had the base to ourselves. This time, when the evaluation was completed, the report got back that we were an excellent unit. Our firing was perfect. The big brass came to check us out this time and when the ToT landed 16 out of 18 rounds on the target, the comment was that " this unit doesn't need any more training, they are excellent. Soon after that orders started coming down for transfers of personnel to Viet Nam. I was assigned to the 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile).
