Review
It's been a year since we last heard new material from Shitar and they
have written many tunes in the interim. Most prolific is bassist
Matt Gorney who contributes ten songs to the disc (as well as ten more
to Re-Plaid).
The most memorable song is the hook-laden Absence,
which is reminiscent of earlier Shitar like Could've Been
Mine. Keyboardist John Gorney is in ballad mode,
which isn't a bad thing. John mellows out with Little
Man and this reviewer's favorite John track of late, Blinding
My Eyes. Check out the harmonized outro which builds
into a Mark Mistysyn solo. Speaking of Mark, he also plays the
emotion card with Don't Leave, a semi-followup
to Big Long Lick's
No Choice. Despite all of this, there
seems to be something missing from Plaid.
Mistysyn is not in guitar maestro mode, opting for an accoustic
guitar instead of his usual riffing and hooking. Not that it's
bad, but we know Mark can do better (screw you, Matt!!). Furthermore,
it sounds as if Matt is foreshadowing ahead to a solo album, playing
much of the rhythym guitar on his own songs. Plaid is good, but plays
too close to the vest. It's restrained chaos.
