Expectation Sabotage 1 (Nervous Center)

All the possibilities of bedroom cassette band romance are available here for enjoyment. Sometimes uncompromising works of music made for their own sake are some of the most fascinating, interesting, and challenging. With no veneer of desperate bids for peer acceptance and coolness, the music has no choice but to speak for itself without being proped up on tbe crutches of the personalities of the performers. But of course those interested already know that. My particular favorites include the space rock and sample tinted Wolfen compositions, Janet Anglosaxaphonejackson Jrs. peculiar pop songs about death and dying, Dennis Connor's extreme and glorious sound of angels crying experiments with cello, Lee Barry's somnambulent experiments with strings and backward tracks, and RF Interference's dense rhythmic collages with vocal samples and drones. Those inclined should drop by The Nervous Center at 4612 N. Lincoln Ave., or send in cassettes. The rest of you experimental music fanatics should check out the CD.

THE NERVOUS CENTER
-EXPECTATlON SABOTAGE 1

-Yup, toot the horn! why not!

(The Nervous Center, 4612 N. Lincoln Ave, Chicago, IL 60625) An ecclectic collection of weirdness frorn the Nervous Center. The Nervous Center is a coffee house in Chicago, run by a DJ from radio station WZRD (88.3 FM in Chicago) Chicago's free-form, non-mainstream radio station. And the music at the coffee house follows the WZRD tradition. Music featured there covers a wide range of DIY efforts from unknown musicians. This CD is the first in a planned series featuring the music of these performers. As such, the music ranges from freaky experimental stuff to quiet ambient, to twisted folk, rock and synth doodling, and everything in-between. "This CD is a perfect disc to help you ease into more adventurous music."

- Paul S. (Jersey Beat)

PERIL

At exactly 8:15 in the morning, on August 6, 1945, the United States dropped the first atomic bomb on Japan. unleashiog a wave of chaos and destruction, that for all but the Japanese, must be incomprehensible. But now it's payback time! Japan is unleashing a formidable sonic wave of destruction all it's own, in the form of a seemingly endless onslaught of "Noise Bands" like Merzbow, Zeni Geva and The Boredoms. This new release from Peril creates quite a furious "noise-fest" all of it's own, one that rivals the best of that genre.

Peril is a four piece band that uses drums, samplers, bass, turntables, guitars, tapes, voice and various machines creating a wild mix that encompasses many musical styles, but still comes out feeling pretty consistent, despite the thick textures and the staggering array of samples that are employed. There's everything from marching band samples to, well, you name it! All tossed together in amazing "cut-up" format, similar to some of the stuff by John Ozwald. All this "chaos" is propelled along, quite competently by bass, drums and guitar, through realms inhabited by such creatures as Christian Marclay, Merzbow, Jonn Ozwald, Elliott Sharp, The Boredoms, Zeni Geva and even, Peter Gabriel! Sound weird? Needless to say, this is one twisted bag of tricks! There's occasionally some showy riffing, that I would prefer wasn't there, but there's still plenty of places where the extra musicianship pays off in a big way. This one is worth getting!

Rhythm Activism -Blood & Mud

Mexican anger and passion still burn fiercely -north of the border? Yes, this three piece hails from Montreal Canada and this disc contains 14 songs that are filled with anger and rage revealing the injustices affecting the poor mexican population and the revolutionary forces bent on resisting that repression. The music covers an exotic range of musical approaches from harsh driving rock to ethnic tinged ballads that at times takes on the feel of a musical. The instrumentation varies from dense and dark, to lighter sparser passages using a wide range of instruments from standard drums, bass, guitars and percussion to cello, accordion, door, saws, violin, creaking chairs, trumpet and baritone sax. But, this is not a band solely bent on attitude or ideology, there are also real musical ideals, conveyed in a dynamic unique way with force and oddly enough even humor. This is what "Alternative" used to mean before it was absorbed into the Mainstream.

Dog Faced Hermans -Those deep buds

"Those deep buds" the newest release from Dog Faced Hermans delivers all the power and energy that fans have come to expect from this 4-piece from Amsterdam. But, more than just power and energy this band outputs a creative angle on the music, transcending the basic bass, drums, guitar and percussion that makes up the foundation of the band. This is due in a large part to the vocal delivery, that can range from thin and sinuey, to heavy-emotive declarations. These vocal parts alternate with wild shrill trumpet passages that can range from animal-like bleating to Miles Davis-ish wails that float and soar above the music or burrow beneath. This all adds up to one powerful disc! Those familiar with Amsterdam's The Ex will notice a similarity musically and politically. Anyway, those familiar with the band already know, this band really can deliver and DOES! This record didn't disappoint me for a moment. I would recommend this disc for anyone looking for something that goes beyond the usual guitar, drums and bass sort of dreck that is touted as... -I'm not going to even use the word.

OBSCURE MUSIC-*

These lists have been compiled for primarily two reasons; first, to provide exposure to artists usually ignored by the "popular/mainstream" music establishment. Secondly, to provide points of reference for visitors to this page so that they may submit info they may have concerning these/or similar artists.

*Many of the bands listed may seem obvious and not so obscure, but then everything is relative. In some cases these headings are arbitrary, as many of the bands have a variety of styles or they defy simple catagorization. There are some links to these bands in the "Links" section and I soon hope to have more of these bands featured in the "Reviews" Section.
