PRAYERS

FOR THE CHRISTIAN YEAR

AND FOR SPECIAL

OCCASSIONS

BY

CHARLES R. BAKER, D.D.

Preface reads :

Preface

These prayers are designed not for use as substitutes for those of the Book of Common Prayer, but to supplement them. The stately forms best adapted to liturgical and public prayer are for that reason less fit for family or private use. Sometimes after the sermon the earnest pastor feels the need of more fervor than belongs to liturgical prayers. So many years have been given to the study of this subject that it is not possible now to remember all my indebtedness in this volume. Of modern writers of prayers, I am sensible of owing most to Mr. Beecher, though I have tried to keep clear of the hortatory form which intrudes so often even with him, and to adhere to direct address to God, which in my judgement, is essential to prayer.
