Tin Type photos

Tompkins/ Coons/ Mars family related

Most of the photos on this Tompkins site have been left to me by Marion Tompkins, daughter of William C. Tompkins and May Mars. Marion did not have children. She was my maternal grandmother's cousin. There are no names, dates recorded on these tin types and when I have indentified someone through other family photos I have placed the name on the tin type. Elizabeth Mars (nee Elizabeth O'Connell ), wife of Jo Harper Mars and mother of Mary Helen "May" Mars, appears in some pictures. There was a Mrs. Rehms living in the house with them in 1934. Unknown if she is an ancestor of Elizabeth Mars or J.H. Mars.

Unidentified men. The photo in middle is dated 1885 in pencil on back and taken at a photo studio called Seeley's, 292 Main St. Pakeepsie, NY. It is also stamped C.H. Gallup photographer, 292 & Main St., Poughkeepsie, NY. On the photo on right is a bearded man holding what seems to be twins in a studio photograph labeled Blair, Rock Rapids, Iowa. The below Iowa photo of a female is a companion portrait to the bearded man. There is a TOMPKINS/Iowa connection as told in 'THE RICHARD WASHBURN FAMILY GENEALOGY' by Ada C. Haight, Ossining, New York. 1937, page 134: "Thomas Tompkins and wife moved to DuBuque, Iowa, where they settled on a farm. They spent their entire life there as did their children, with the exception of William Tompkins, who in 1896 came east to visit and while here married Ophelia G. Tompkins Sherman, his cousin, of Clinton Corners, New York." Although DuBuque is on the east and Rock Rapids is in the upper far left corner of the state.

These two men appear similar. The photo on the right is from Harry's Gallery, 405 & 407 Market St., Over Stark & Forney's Jewelry Store, Steubenville, Ohio. I have one Ohio connection for the Tompkins / Mars family. When Will Tompkins writes a postcard to Elizabeth Mars in 1935 he says that he's just arrived in Columbus, Ohio and Horace and Eddie were at the bus.

The photo in the middle and the companion photo of the woman on the right are from Gubelman, No. 79 Newark Ave., Jersey City, NJ.
