When Three Mile Island (TMI) blew in 1979, it confirmed fears about the dangers of nuclear power. President Bush wants to build more nuclear power plants as part of his energy policy. Before building more nuclear power plants, we need to BEGIN to dispose of the high level radioactive waste we have generated to date. All of our hopes had been based on a long term depository at Yucca Mountain in Nevada. The people of Nevada have prevented this, and no other long term option has been developed. We cannot let our children, grandchildren, and future generations suffer under this burden of additional waste until we define a way to manage the waste we have been generating. This high level waste is being "temporarily" stored on site at all nuclear power plants. Sounds safe, eh? |
