"A suit":
When an eligible young male wished to marry an eligible young female, he was supposed to ask permission of the girl's father. In effect, he was presenting a petition, or a "suit" to the dad. In some cases, this might be the beginnings of a legal, binding contract, of course. It was a sort of a legal "suit," and the person presenting it was known as the "suitor," while the person receiving it was called the "suitee." Now, if the party of the first part, herein known as the party-or, should present suit to the party of the second part, herein known as the party-ee, then the party of the first part might party with the party of the second part, at a party.
