Elmer Rice's THE ADDING MACHINE
Strongly influenced by the expressionistic movement of the early twentieth century German theatre, THE ADDING MACHINE was first produced in 1923. A Broadway success, the monumental scale and technical sophistication of the show were enough to make it THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA of its day.
The STG production however, stripping the play down to its bare essentials, leaves us perhaps an even stronger piece of work. Issues of man and machine, love and hate, dreams and goals unfulfilled are as valid and vital as they were seventy years ago.
