NetScape
NetScape is probably the Software of the Century. It has made the Internet simple to access and learn about. Start learning about the World Wide Web with NetScape's Button Bars. (What's New, What's Cool, ... etc.)

This section has the latest problem solving information available from NetScape, including notes on
resolving General Protection Faults and other incompatibilities such as printing problems.
(Refer to this section for answers to many common problems.)
Read the UltraNet Technical Notes
- Important:
If you obtain NetScape Navigator Personal Edition, do NOT attempt to use the dialer included with it!
- Multiple winsock dialers can cause conflicts on your system which will prevent PPP connections from functioning
- Do a "CUSTOM INSTALLATION".
Specify that you will use your existing
Trumpet Winsock Internet Access Manager, (provided with the UltraNet Kit.)
- If NetScape will not install, you must check your system for the
Win32s Extensions
If installed, they must be checked to be sure that they are the latest version.
- Netcape often generates an, "Unable to Locate Host", message when launching. This has been an issue for even the newest versions. It does not usually indicate a problem.
- Clearing the message and pushing the "Home" button on the button bar is one way to get around this issue.
- Another is to set the "Styles" (under "Options" + "Preferences" on the NetScape menu bar) to start with a blank home page.
This will allow NetScape to launch and stabilize before attempting to load a page.
- If a second "Unable to Locate Host" message results from an attempt to reload, your system
may be unable to start or maintain a PPP connection.
Refer to
Connectivity Section of the Quick Reference Guide.
If you are certain that you are connected, you may have incorrect proxy entries.
- Incorrect proxy entries will prevent NetScape from "seeing" the Internet.
UltraNet has installed a new proxy server at a different address and many
have not read the bulletins and made the required changes!
- Web Performance may be improved by experimenting with the Proxy Settings, (found under "Options" + "Preferences" on the NetScape menu bar).
- Clear (delete), the entries for the Proxies and Ports. (Leave them blank).
OR
- If you want to try the proxy service, the entries are for HTTP, GOPHER and WAIS and MUST read:
"www-proxy.ultranet.com", and the port entry set to "8000". (No quotes).
- Your "mileage may vary", depending on your particular browsing patterns.
- Clear BOTH the Memory and the Disk Caches after noting any problem related to loading an incomplete page.
- NetScape cannot print a "selected" block of text. The command is greyed out, (not available).
Text must be highlighted, copied and pasted into an application that will print such as the Windows "NotePad" utility.
- Printing of full pages is very good and bubble jet printers do a fine job with the colors.
Printing performance has improved in the newer versions and printing problems should be addressed with the latest versions of printer drivers for the specific printer.
- Large graphics which fall on a page break will prevent NetScape from printing properly.
This problem is caused by the way the page is formatted and NOT the software.
- NetScape can cause General Protection Faults with some video drivers.
They list Cirrus Logic drivers on their own "Help" pages for this problem with Cirrus video systems.
Other driver up-dates are available from the manufacturers of video accelerator cards. You are advised to try the "generic" MicroSoft video drivers already on your systems if buggy third party drivers cannot be up-graded.
- The newer versions of NetScape support the latest HTML codes. When creating Web Pages, you should be sure to view them in both early and later versions to determine what effects these changes have on the appearance of your pages.
- Refer to
Downloading and
Installing Software for instructions if you want to up-grade to newer versions of NetScape.
- I use all of the beta's as they become available and, in general, they are stable. (An exception has been v 2.0b1-2-3).
