standard for World Wide Web Browsing. It has captured
more than 70% of the browser market.

NetScape Software
if you're ready to download!
- Go to the
Step-by-step Instructions for Beginners if you're not sure how to download.
- Order a
Retail Version of NetScape online, with a manual!
- Order NetScape by phone @ (415) 528-3777, Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. PST.
- Purchase NetScape at any retail software outlet.
- Note:
If you already have an Internet connection, obtain the LAN editition of NetScape if you can. You do not need the Personal Edition of NetScape which contains an integrated dialer.
Continue to use your UltraNet Access Manager, (Trumpet winsock) or the
Windows 95 PPP Dialer, to access UltraNet.
Multiple winsock dialers will cause conflicts on your system.
(If you purchase the "Personal Edition" of NetScape you can avoid this problem by doing a
"Custom Installation" and specifying that you already have an Internet connection).

(Although not the very latest version, still another way to get NetScape).
- Learn still more about NetScape
below.
Why NetScape?
- NetScape uses HTML, (Hypertext
Markup Language), standards that most web pages are written to take advantage of.
- If you use a different web browser, the pages will
not appear as they were designed.
- Forms may not display properly. (Or at all).
- E-Mail links from Web Pages may generate error messages.
- Graphics in the now common .jpg format may not load.
- You may see error messages at points in a page
where the browser does not know how to handle the NetScape
instructions.
- If you enjoy the WWW,
you should consider the NetScape line of products.
Because NetScape Communications has recently become
a public entity, free distribution of NetScape software
products is no longer permitted.
- You are allowed to download and evaluate the
NetScape products under the terms of their license agreements.
- We strongly recommend that you register your NetScape product at the NetScape Web Site.
- Registered customers can receive Technical Support from NetScape.
- You can choose to order the
Official NetScape Guide and other training materials.
- If you want to learn still more about the NetScape products,
go to
NetScape Product Information.
The downloadable versions are either Beta or Evaluation
copies of the NetScape Products.
- A beta version of the software is a new
version, that you will be testing, and is usually not supported.
These versions are currently under development and will generally
exhibit bugs and some features that are not fully
implemented.
- The evaluation versions are free samples, but are fully functional and
generally well tested.
We recommend version 2.01 of NetScape which has been proven
to be stable.
- If you choose to download either a beta
or an evaluation copy of the software, you
should follow the instructions below.
- If you choose to order the licensed release of NetScape,
you can be sent disks which you may use for your installation.
Follow the instructions that come with the disks, and you may jump ahead to the step on
Configuring NetScape for UltraNet.
Step by Step Instructions
Read them through before you start!
Keep your current browser open, on your screen so that you can follow these
directions step by step.
Tip:
Press "Alt", then "Tab" to get back to your program manager and Internet Tool Kit to begin.
If you want more information on general practices and principles, review:
Begin!
1. Create a New Directory for your Download.
Go the the Windows File Manager, (Explorer if you are using Windows 95).
- This can be any place you choose in the directory
structure, and should have a simple name such as "utility" .
(No quotes.) It has to have less than 8 letters if you are not
using Windows 95.
- It should NOT be named the name of the program
that you wish to download. (You'll see why, later on).
- This command is found under File + Create Directory
on the File Manager menu bar.
2. Download NetScape Using FTP.
Launch the WS-FTP Application included in your UltraNet Tool Kit.
3. Check for Viruses.
Locate the downloaded file by selecting the directory you
created in step #1 in the Windows File Manager.
Scan the downloaded file for viruses.
Netscape is very unlikely to cause a problem, but this is an excellent habit
to get into.
4.
Expand the downloaded file.
Double click on the download to launch the file de-compression process.
Press the "F5" key to refresh the file manager window. You will now see the de-compressed
NetScape installation files listed in the right hand window of your file manager.
5. Install NetScape.
Close ALL programs, such as MicroSoft Office, that may be running in the background on your system.
NetScape will not install if MS-Office is running.
(Look for the MS-Office button bar at the top of your screen and choose "Close".)
- In the directory where the now de-compressed installation files are listed, find and double click the file named "setup.exe", which will launch a standard Windows installation procedure.
- You will be asked for a directory name in which to install the
new program.
- DO NOT install into the directory where
your current web browser resides, OR into the directory that you have
expanded the download in! Follow the prompts.
- You will be asked if you want to create
a new program group named NetScape.
Answer "Yes", and you can drag the new icons into your Internet
Program Group later on if you wish.
- NOTE:
NetScape will not install on a system with an older version of the "Win 32 s Extensions".
(They must either be updated or removed from Windows).
Read the
NetScape
Technical Documents
on the Win 32 s Extensions for procedures if you encounter a problem.
6. Log in and launch your new version of NetScape.
7. Configure NetScape for UltraNet.
NetScape will run, but will come up on the NetScape Home Page and will
not be able to read news or mail until you set up the options for UltraNet.
- Open the menu bar selection labeled Options,
and click on Preferences.
- Under Styles, set the home page location
to a page of your choosing.
Hopefully the UltraNet Home Page location!
- Under Mail and News, set the server
names to mail.ultranet.com and news.ultranet.com
respectively.
- Fill in your e-mail address and real name in the boxes provided.
- Under Proxies, I am not recommending any entries at this time.
(My personal preference, only. rhf).
- The remaining settings can be made to your personal preferences
for font and screen colors etc.
- Comprehensive HELP on the NetScape preferences and
operating features is available on line under Help
on the NetScape menu bar.
8.
Clean up! (Optional).
Get some drive space back by eliminating the now uneeded installation files.
- Locate the directory you created in step #1.
- Move the download, (n16e122.exe or n32e122.exe), off into an archive directory for safe keeping. Create a new directory for this purpose if you don't already have one.
- Delete the files remaining, but leave the directory on the disk for
future downloads.
- Select the first file in the list by left clicking
on it.
- Leaving this file highlighted, scroll down to the last
file in the list and while holding down the shift
key on your keyboard, left click on the last file.
- All of the files in this subdirectory which you created earlier should now
be highlighted.
- Press the Delete key on your keyboard.
- Answer the resulting dialog Yes + Yes to All.
9. Go Surfing!
Don't tell us this isn't fun!
10. Register NetScape.
Go to "Help" + "Registration Information" on the NetScape menu bar.
