Road Biking on Cape Cod
a work in progress |

Cape Cod offers many cycling opportunities. There are many bike paths starting at the Cape Cod Canal. The Canal service roads are seven mile paved surfaces that are ideal for families and others looking for flat, smooth cycling.
Crossing the Bourne Bridge and traveling south on MA Rt 28 brings you to Falmouth and the Shining Sea Bike Path. This path connects the center of Falmouth to Woods Hole. A four mile, flat roll through forest, salt ponds, and the beach.
From the Sagamore Bridge and traveling east on US Rt 6 brings you to Dennis and the Cape Cod Rail Trail. This trail keeps you off roads for more than thirty (30) miles and traverses swamps, marshes, ponds, and beaches.
Even in July and August you can find many quiet roads that are safe to ride. Several maps are available in bike shops that will highlight the safest roads. I work at True Wheel Cycles in Pocasset, MA and I like to recommend my favorite road ride. I send people to the Falmouth Village Green to find the start of the Cape Cod Marathon. This well marked course rewards the rider with over 26 miles of rolling terrain.
For a longer ride, I recommend the MAC ride. Mad About Cycling (MAC) is a rider advocacy group that keeps the spirit of Don "Mac" Mc Culloch alive. The MAC ride can be a 62 or 100 mile ride through the Villages of Falmouth, Mashpee, Sandwich, Barnstable, and Bourne. A beauty of a ride any way you go. For a great time the MAC Ride is formally held by MAC in September and is known as the Ride To Eat. This ride starts early and ends with a feast.
