Born To Run (Experiments)

Written by Tricia Tenpenny, this parody of Bruce Springsteen's Born To Run is about being an untenured experimental psychologist.

In the day we sweat it out in the glow of a super VGA screen
At night we read through the journals of glory, our own names seldom seen
Sprung from grad schools, oh so fine
Great things are expected
Because we've all got such good minds
Baby, this career rips the bones from your back
It's a death trap, it's a suicide rap
We oughta get out while we're young
But chumps like us, baby, we were born to run (experiments)

When I let you in I wanna be your friend
If you've got normal or corrected vision
Just wrap your mind 'round this simple task
And let me time your decisions
Give me data I can understand
We'll run till we drop, baby, I'll be your fan
Will you give me the data that I desire
'Cause baby, I'm scared that I'll get fired
But you don't know how it feels
I want to know if it's all worthwhile
Oh, I want to know if the finding's real

Beyond our reach the biggest names are held in high regard
They get their grants from NSF
And we all call them "stars"
Though you're in the dark, you've gotta make your mark
You've gotta be a good scientist
I wanna die with a manuscript under review
An everlasting optimist

The halls are jammed with broken heroes
On a last pre-tenure drive
Everybody's working late tonight
To find a p less than point oh-five
Together maybe we can live with the sadness
And conquer all the madness in our souls
Someday, baby, I don't know when, we're gonna get to that place
Where we really want to go
We'll be federally funded
But till then, chumps like us
Baby, we were born to run (experiments)

Feel the Shame

Written by Tricia Tenpenny soon after Princess Diana's death, this parody of Bob Seger's Still the Same is about the damage done by the paparazzi & the tabloid newspapers.

Oh, what fun -- Romeo and Juliet
Here they come, looking just a bit upset
A flash of light, the lovers know that they've been caught
But you don't care that they're distraught
You don't give it a second thought

Oh, what fun -- someone's where they don't belong
Superman's finally doing something wrong
Ain't it cool to catch another guy's mistake?
How many pictures did you take?
And how much money did you make?

Do you feel the shame?
It caught up with you yesterday
It was just a game
Another shocking expose'
So you did your harm
And now you've made the people cry
Do you feel the shame?
Did they have to die?

A predator, you finally caught and killed your prey
Now you're gonna have to pay
There is nothing you can say

So do you feel the shame?
Do you feel the shame?
Is it still a game?
Will it ever change?
Do you feel the shame?

Hey, Dude

Written by Jim Schmid, this parody of the Beatles' Hey, Jude pokes fun at Beatles fans who criticize the Rolling Stones.

hey dude.....don't take it bad.....
your beloved Beatles.....their day they've haddddddddd....
the minute you get it into your head...
then you'll realize, that your band is deadddddd.....

So let it in, and let it out....
and please, don't pout....
the band you won't forego....
broke up, almost thirty years agooooooo....

hey dude, it's really sad....
that you find reason....
to call our band badddddddddd...
but we go to our band's show,
while we know
you're sittin' home, and listenin' to the stereooooooooooo.....OOOO...OOOOOO

hey dude.....I feel sooooo bad....
your band broke up....and what'ssssss soooooo saddddd....
is that rather than face up to facts....
while we're in the stadiums...you'll be in your sacks....
