Ride Description
This inaugural edition of the PA400k is based on the "Hawk's Nest" PA300k that heads up to Hawk's Nest along NY Rt 97.  Setting out at the usual Quakertown hostel start/finish, we take a quick jaunt over to the Milford Bakery (The iced cinnamon buns are highly recommended).  We then turn north, going through Little York, and then up one of our favorite roads, Sweet Hollow Road and down Tunnel Ave.  We pass through Asbury enroute to Belvidere and on to  Blairstown.  After the Blairstown controle, we begin the long climb over the Kittatinny Mountains via Millbrook road and descend into the Water Gap Recreation area at Millbrook Village.  We continue north along Old Mine Road through Layton and up to Port Jervis where we pick up scenic Rt 97 that takes us past the Hawk's Nest overlook.  We cross the historic Roebling Delaware Aqueduct and then ride along the beautiful Lackawaxen River tow path.  We eventually turn away from the river and work our way up to the top of the Allegheny Plateau and then head back south through the Delaware State Forest and return to the Water Gap Recreation area via the Dingman's Ferry Bridge.  We retrace our path back to Millbrook Village and then continue along the Delaware River all the way back to the Water Gap.  We cross back into PA on the Rt 80 Delaware River Bridge pedestrian walk. While on the pedestrian walk and for 1 block afterwards, you will be riding on the Appalachian Trail.  We continue working our way south along the Delaware River, through Portland, Belvidere, Phillipsburg, and Riegelsville. Our return path takes us along the north shore of Lake Nockamixon before the last couple of turns back to the hostel finish.

As you can see, the route takes us through several state and national forest areas -- it would not be unusual to encounter wild life including black bears.  The following link provides some tips on what to do if you encounter a black bear

There are several steep, extended climbs.  A triple or 39x27 is highly recommended.
