Ride Description (updated 5/29)
This inaugural edition of the PA600k is composed of two loops that start and return back to the Weisel hostel. The first loop is approximately 400k and is based on the "Water Gap" PA400k that heads into the Delaware Water Gap Recreation Area. After returning back to the hostel for the sleep-over stop, the second loop is a 200k out-and-back course into the Lancaster area.
Setting out at the hostel start/finish, we follow the PA300k route to Cherryville. We then head to Danielsville where we make our first crossing over the Applachian Trail at Little Gap. After an exhilarating descent past the Blue Mountain Ski resort, we follow the valley road which offers spectacular views of the mountain ridge off to our right as we head into Cherry Valley. Instead of going over Fox Gap like on the 300k, we'll head up to Water Gap and enter the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area. Riding along quiet park roads, we head to the lunch stop at Flat's Deli in Hainesville. After briefly retracing our route back to Layton, we cross over into Pennsylvania via the Dingman's Ferry toll bridge.
Time now, for those granny-gears, because up and over the Allegheny Front is where we're headed next. The reward for that effort is in the form of a really scenic stretch along Rt 97, across the Roebling Bridge, and the Lackawaxen River. Again, we head up the Allegheny front, but along a more gentle gradient that won't seem as hard. Riding along the rolling terrain of the Allegheny Plateau, we eventually head back down past Bushkill Falls and return to the Water Gap National Recreation Area -- this time, along the PA side, as we work our way back to Water Gap.
After a controle stop in Water Gap, we continue south along Rt 611 through the Water Gap with the prominent features of Mt Minsi on the PA side and Mt Tammany on the NJ side. As daylight begins to fade, we cross back into NJ at Belvidere for a direct shot back to the start/finish hostel for the sleep-over stop. The second day's loop is an out and back segment through French Creek state park and into the Amish country near Lancaster.
As shown in the route profile, there are several steep, extended climbs. A triple or 39x27 is highly recommended.
