Some basic hand gestures of Khmer court dance

See hand gestures here!

Drawings are of hands of Chan Moly Sam courtesy of Bonnie Meier-Periale

Kbach Chung Aul (pointing); representing bud or sprout.

Kbach Sung Luc; representing leaf.

Kbach Cheap; representing flower.

Kbach Coung; representing fruit.

Though these gestures represent a cycle, they are used together in various ways to create a meaning depending on the context of the dance.

Most are gestures from everyday life, for example combining Kbach Sung Luc and upside down Kbach Cheap and turning back to Kbach Sung Luc may mean a beckoning gesture …'come here'.
