The Verne and Onie Woods Web Page
TADA! Here we are! (September 2002)
Here's about all you'll need (or want) to know about us:
-
We have been married 60 years; in spite of this we're
still good friends.
-
We're 81 (Verne) and 78 (Onie) years old and are retired -- sort of.
-
We're natives of Memphis,TN.
-
We attended the University of Iowa.
-
We've lived in Lexington,MA, for 48 years.
-
For decades we skied -- quite competently so.
-
But we were (and to some extent still are) much more competent in solving
crossword puzzles. Once, in 1997, we solved six straight NY Times
Sunday Crossword Puzzles without a single error. Nevertheless, we're increasingly
susceptible to quite stupid errors.
-
Verne's career centered around science and technical writing and he later
worked in neurobiology at Brandeis University. He still spends too much
time reading science magazines.
-
Onie was for 30 years the manager of a small construction firm.
-
Verne, in l994, underwent heart by-pass surgery (a quadruple). Afterwards,
his 50-year love affairs with cigarettes and tennis came to an end -- cigarettes
because he lacked the temerity to challange a transformed national ethos
and tennis because he didn't want to go out there on the tennis court and
play like an old man.
-
Onie thinks she's the best flower-gardener in all of Eastern Massachusetts;
she's good, but not that good. In the winter, she plays bridge -- excessively.
-
Verne, during WWII, was a B-17 pilot in the 8th AF's 91st Bomb Group and
was shot down on his l3th mission on New Year's Eve, 1943; he finished
the war at Stalag Luft I, a POW camp on the Baltic. To read about it click

-
Onie is (was) a pilot also but she was never shot down (or maybe she just
hasn't mentioned it). She was the only female in an Aero Club started in
the '50s and holds membership card No. 1 in the Club and with Verne, too.
