>Many pointers to additional resources have arrived since January
>which are not included here. The list of additions is not yet complete
>and will be published separately.
GENERAL NOTES:
1. There is a separate list available of planning (urban planning and
otherwise) resources available on Internet. Contact Colin R. Leech
for details.
NOTE: This is not yet finished. Please don't bug me for it!
I'm working as fast as other priorities will permit me!
2. Additions and corrections are welcome. Please send to Colin R. Leech
. Please take a minute to check the
information for your list. Note: I do not personally follow all of
these lists and newsgroups.
3. Feel free to pass this list along to others who might be interested.
4. My intent is to keep this file as short as possible, so I have limited
the amount of description about each resource. Exceptions to this are
mailing lists which are not open to the general public. For more
information on a mailing list, newsgroup, etc. please check it
out yourself.
5. This is not intended to be a complete list of "hobbyist" or environmental
lists and newsgroups, in order to minimize the size of the file. However,
this is not always possible as many straddle these lines. Feel free
to start your own list if you are interested in these areas.
>6. [Note on bicycle mailing lists deleted. See below.]
7. This file contains the following sections:
- Mailing lists
- Usenet newsgroups
- other (gopher, ftp, WWW, BBSs, etc.)
-------
MAILING LISTS
The "subscribe" message (or other commands) is generally placed in the
body of an e-mail message which is then sent to the listserv/listproc/
majordomo, unless otherwise noted. The "Subject:" line is generally
ignored. For more information, send the command "help" to the same address.
[Note to Ottawa-area readers: Lists marked [O*] can be read as Usenet
newsgroups under the culist.* hierarchy if you are on FreeNet or a Carleton
University machine, or "downstream" of them news-wise. Do _not_ subscribe
to them yourself! It generates a lot of unnecessary extra traffic on the
network.]

Description: A privately-run mailing list for transit supporters and
anti-road activists. The purpose is to provide a forum for discussion
of current issues, a quick way of distributing action alerts,
distributing pertinent information, discussion of strategies,
and general discussion of the anti-road movement. Among other
informal associations, one goal of the list is to facilitate
electronic communications between members of the Alliance for a
Paving Moritorium.
Basic info such as name, address and phone should be provided. Also, a
BRIEF description of your background and successes in fighting roads. I
would like to summarize such information (not neccessarily identifying
individuals) to be used as inspiration as the list grows.

THE HEAVY VEHICLES/ROADS E-MAIL NETWORK:
David Cebon has begun an 'email network' for people
concerned with heavy vehicles, road damage, bridges, vehicle/road interaction,
weigh-in-motion, heavy vehicle safety, and other related subjects.
At the moment, messages are handled through his own e-mail.
Subscribers e-mail information to Mr. Cebon .
The 'Vehicle/Roads E-mail Network' is run by David Cebon on behalf of the
International Association of Heavy Vehicle Weights and Dimensions. It aims
to facilitate communication between researchers and practitioners
interested in the problems of heavy vehicles and roads.
Regular news bulletins are published over the network and sent by e-mail to
all members. The system has completely open access. Any person working in
the field of heavy vehicles and roads can become a member of the network
and anyone can submit items for publication over the network.
Anyone interested in technical, operational or regulatory aspects of heavy
vehicles, road damage, bridges, vehicle/road interaction, weigh-in-motion,
heavy vehicle safety, or other related subjects may join the network.

USENET NEWSGROUPS (NETNEWS)
Usenet is a system of newsgroups which are propagated from site to site.
You do not subscribe to these individually as is the case with a mailing
list. If you don't know what Usenet is, ask your local system administrator
whether you have access to it or not. If your site does not receive Usenet,
you are basically out of luck.
Relevant international Usenet newsgroups:
> misc.transport.air-industry (moderated)

> bit.listserv.airline (gateway to the airline list above)

Note: Newsgroups in the rec.* hierarchy tend to be oriented more toward
hobbyists than professionals. Exceptions that come to mind are
rec.bicycles.soc, and rec.railroad which mix both aspects.
Relevant local newsgroups:
Local newsgroup hierarchies often do not propagate extensively.
In this list, I include only those newsgroups which propagate to
at least a full city. Newsgroups local to one node or site are excluded.
Additions are welcomed.

Dialup Bulletin Boards:
About 30 organizations maintain their own bulletin board systems including
AASHTO, ITE, EPA, FAA, FTA, McTrans (a clearing house for transportation
software), and various universities and DOTs.
A list of these BBSs has been compiled by Jerome Maddock
and can be obtained from the Institute of Transportation Engineers BBS at:
Modem: (800) 982-4683 in USA [and Canada?] or (202) 863-5487
Settings: 300/1200/2400 baud, N-8-1 or E-7-1

FedWorld is a gateway to more than 120 BBSs operated by federal
government agencies and departments. FedWorld also has lots of useful
files, including White House documents and lists of federal job openings
nationwide. To save on long-distance charges, you can use telnet, ftp,
or the World Wide Web to reach FedWorld and then access all the
BBSs on its gateway.
Book on USA Federal Government BBSs:
Title: How to Access the Government's Electronic Bulletin Boards
Author: Bruce Maxwell
or
Price: $19.95
Pages: 300+
To order: telephone 800-638-1710
fax 202-887-6706
mail Congressional Quarterly Books, Dept. U71,
1414 22nd St. N.W., Washington, D.C. 20037
Availability: can be ordered (above), or in bookstores Feb. 1995
The book has detailed descriptions of nearly 200 BBSs operated
by federal agencies and departments, and includes Internet
addresses for those boards that have them. The boards
offer everything from White House documents to State Department
travel advisories to publications about how to start a small
business. Accessing all the boards is free (except in some cases
for the cost of a long-distance telephone call).
The same author is just completing work on a companion book, "How to
Access the Federal Government on the Internet," which will contain
descriptions of nearly 300 federal government Internet sites. CQ will
publish the book in May 1995, and it will cost $19.95.
Complete European Railway schedules on CompuServe:
(Thanks to Dennis Larson for the pointer to this.)
It is a very good program and local people report that it will find
smaller towns and also calculate the correct train connections. It
also includes Russia. For those people not really familar with Europe,
it is a bit difficult as there are many stations in places like Paris
and London. Questions to answer include departure station and desired
route (often many choices!) There are versions in German or English.
Of course German is the first choice as the service comes from German
Federal Railways.
For those on CompuServe:
