| The characters and themes of this piece are taken from archetypes, shaman myths, age-old symbols, various mythological creatures, and dream imagery, compiled and pared down from a year of research. The piece itself went through many transitions, and began to take its shape over the course of the movement with witch I started experimenting in November. The workshops were inspired by the idea of "gesture theatre", first introduced to me in Scotland by a Hungarian theatre troupe called the Shamans, who shared the theatre with us. They held a workshop on how this kind of theatre is produced, and I found it to be an innovative choreographic tool, that directly stems from the actors' personal stories in order to create organic movement. I tried to create the piece in conjunction with the actors' stories, so that the work in workshopping and the story of the play went hand in hand. I did not show the (or finish) the actual script until late March, so that the actors wouldn't have preconceived notions to "put upon" the text, and I could let them inform me as well. The result, as it stands now, is a group of actors who move as if they were a dance company and act as if they were truly living in a fairytale. The play is just that, an installation of sorts that will hopefully take the audience into the world of dreams for a brief spell. |
