After doing very little to address the chronic
lack of
power in their system through the
first half of the 2007 draft, the Pirates took Clark in round 28. Baseball America
ranked him as the 193rd best draft prospect, so he seemingly had the talent
to go in round 5 or a little later. I don't
know why he fell to round 28, but the Pirates obviously weren't going to be able to sign
him for slot money. Clark played as a freshman at the University of
California Santa Barbara, but left because he didn't like the playing time he was
getting. The power he showed at Riverside is his primary asset. He doesn't
run well and may not be good enough defensively to stay at 3B. Signing
him would have helped address the usual hole in their draft, but the Pirates seldom
paid above slot money under Dave Littlefield and didn't do so with Clark. He headed
to LSU.
