Brolsma started off at the Univ. of Nevada, but had Tommy
John surgery
after his first year. After returning for one year, he sat
out 2007 and got his degree. He then went to graduate school at
Texas Tech and used his last year of eligibility. In addition to the
other poor numbers, Brolsma hit 11 batters in 2008 in just 21.2
IP, so something was clearly very wrong with his control. Baseball America rated him
the 72nd best prospect in Texas. It'd be interesting to see the explanation, but BA
didn't provide one. At least some scouts, including one of the Pirates', must
believe Brolsma has a good arm and just needs to get completely healthy.
He has a low-90s fastball and a slider, and figures to be a
reliever. He signed after the draft and could head to either State College or Bradenton.
