Payne started his career at NC State in 2005 as a pitcher. He started converting to hitter in 2006, but didn't win a regular spot until his senior year. He appears to have very good plate discipline. The Pirates may believe he still has untapped potential as a hitter. He signed soon after the draft and should head to State College, although it's liable to be overloaded with third basemen.
