Bangs was eligible for the draft as a redshirt sophomore. He’s struck out a lot of batters in college, but otherwise wasn’t effective in 2009. He also plays first base and is one of his team’s better hitters. Baseball America rated him the 5th best prospect in the Coastal Plain League in the summer of 2008, citing a fastball that reached 92, a hard slider and a lot of broken bats. The power profile explains the Pirates’ interest in him, but with two years of eligibility left he’s probably more likely than not to return to college.
