Cooper went 7-1, 1.47 as a high school senior and was
chosen by Baseball America as the
5th best draft prospect in Tennessee. As a junior he went 5-2, 1.31.
His draft status rose in 2009 when his velocity got
up to 92-93 some of the time and he showed a good breaking ball.
Neither was consistent, however, and he sometimes dropped to the 86-88 range. BA
characterized him as a 6th to 8th round talent, so the
Pirates will have to go over slot to sign him. He has a commitment to Kentucky
and reportedly wants $900K, which is probably more than he should get.
