I’ve seen references to Dermody as a power pitcher, but PG
Crosschecker says he threw
85-87 all year. He also has an excellent change. Given his size, scouts no doubt expect him to add velocity. He’s put up gaudy numbers in high school. As a junior he went 6-3, 0.78 with 130 Ks. As a senior, 7-3, 0.78, with 15 BBs and 135 Ks in 63 IP. It’s hard to know, however, what kind of competition he was facing in Iowa. In one game he fanned all 18 batters he faced over six innings. Baseball America rated him the 7th best prospect in Iowa. He has a commitment to the University of Iowa, although he sounded open in an interview to the possibility of turning pro. In another article he said he’d wait until late in the summer to decide whether to turn pro. The Pirates may have drafted him as a backup plan, in case they don’t sign some of their earlier picks.
