Gelinas spent a year at Pepperdine, pitching very little, then played JC ball for a year at Arizona Central. He’s one of the top JC pitching prospects in the country, ranked 4th among all JC prospects by Perfect Game. Baseball America rated him the 12th best prospect in Arizona, which isn’t surprising considering that he’s a big lefthander who throws in the low 90s, with a sometimes-good slider and a change. PG Crosschecker also calls him the best JC prospect in Arizona, which holds a lot of JC talent. He’s committed to UC Santa Barbara, which considers him its top recruit. The Pirates will probably have to pay early round money to sign him and may have drafted him as a backup plan, depending on their success in signing some of their other highly regarded pitching draftees.
