Hooper went 6-2-2, 3.63 with 62 Ks in 66.1 IP as a senior. He throws in the mid- to upper-80s, with a curve and change. Given his height, scouts no doubt would consider him projectable. Baseball America rated him the 86th best prospect in California, although they offered no further explanation. He has a commitment to UC Irvine. It’s hard to say whether the Pirates will make it a priority to sign some of the high school pitchers they drafted in the later rounds, such as Hooper and Matt Dermody, or whether they were drafted as fallbacks in case the team is unable to sign guys like Zack von Rosenburg and Trent Stevenson.
