Baseball America rated Luquette the 12th best prospect in Louisiana in a good year for the state. He fell in the draft due to pre-draft Tommy John surgery, an LSU scholarship, and the possibility of a seven-figure bonus demand. He’s also a quarterback and plans to play football at LSU as well, which will further increase his negotiating leverage. BA refers to him as an “extremely athletic catcher” with a great arm and good defensive skills, but an uncertain bat as the result of facing poor competition in high school. The Pirates may have drafted him with the idea of trying to sign him if they were unable to sign 10th round pick Joseph Schoenfeld.
