Bomback played for Broward CC before attending Florida Atlantic. He had a year of eligibility left but signed with the Pirates. His team appears to have played in a high-offense environment, so his hitting #s have to be considered with that in mind. He was assigned to Bradenton, in keeping with the Pirates' puzzling tradition of loading their rookie league roster with college players. That tradition seems to have ended with Dave Littlefield's long overdue departure. Bomback had a decent season against the younger competition there, drawing a lot of walks, not striking out much and hitting some doubles. He was the team's primary thirdbaseman and played a little at 2B. He started off 2008 as a backup at Hickory and finished it at Lynchburg, playing mainly 2B and 3B. He had a good walk total at Hickory and otherwise just held his own at the plate. The Pirates decided to convert him to catcher and he was playing behind the plate in spring training in 2009. He spent most of the season as a utility player with West Virginia. He caught only six games and instead played mainly at second, which probably became necessary when Jarek Cunningham went out for the year, Adenson Chourio struggled and Greg Picart was hurt. Bomback made some progress with the bat after hitting just .115 in April. He didn't play in May, but hit .269 in June and .328 in July. He'll probably serve in some sort of backup role in class A in 2010.
