The Pirates acquired Fryer and RHP Casey Erickson from the Yankees for Eric Hinske. Fryer was originally a catcher, but the Brewers moved him to the outfield. He played more in left than behind the plate in 2007 and in 2008 caught only five games while with the Yankees. New York had acquired him for LHP Chase Wright. Fryer had an oustanding season in 2007 in low A, but was struggling in high A when the Pirates acquired him. Considering that he was less than two months shy of 24 at the time of the trade, it's hard to see a lot of upside. The Pirates moved Fryer back behind the plate and installed him as the starting catcher at Lynchburg, over Kris Watts. He showed a bit more power and patience than he had before the trade, but getting out of the pitcher-friendly Florida State League may have accounted for that. He's athletic and runs well, and has a good arm; he threw out 36% of opposing base stealers with the Hillcats. The Pirates will have to decide whether he's ready for AA in 2010.
