Gimenez was considered a decent catching prospect while he was with the Astros, mainly on account of very good defensive ability, including a strong arm.  At the plate, he obviously hasn't shown much strike zone judgment and his modest power was never enough to make up for his weak on-base skills.  He did make some progress in 2005-06, but unfortunately he had shoulder surgery that cost him the entire 2007 season.  He didn't get back on track offensively in the Rays' system when he returned in 2008.  His throwing might also have been affected a little, as he threw out only 10 of 32 base stealers.  The Pirates signed him to a minor league deal for 2009.  He started the season at Altoona, but ended up splitting his time between the Curve and Indianapolis.  He played more at third than anywhere else and also caught, played first and a little in left, and served as a DH.  His bat obviously rebounded fairly well, although his plate discipline remained poor.  He didn't hit enough to make it anywhere except as a catcher, though I don't know for sure whether he did so little catching (23 games) in 2009 because his shoulder wouldn't hold up to it or because of team needs.  In any event, he'll be a free agent again in the fall.
