I couldn't find any pre-draft information on
Garcia, which
is unusual for a player drafted this
high. Catchers are often overdrafted and the Pirates went heavily for them
in the 2007 draft. This probably reflected the evaporation of their catching
depth that, at the time, left them with no prospects and two catchers at the major league level who had various drawbacks. Garcia signed a few days after the draft and started off at Bradenton. He didn't hit at all, finishing in an 0-for-38 slide. He returned to the GCL in 2008, although he played only sparingly. Other than showing pretty good power he didn't make much progress with the bat. He doesn't seem to be going anywhere and if he hadn't been a fairly high draft pick might not return.
