Despite Marquez' outstanding first season, the Pirates
didn't bring him to spring training in the US in 2008. That may be an
indication that they had doubts about his ceiling and he appears to have fallen
behind Ramon Cabrera on the depth chart
in the VSL. He played almost as much at first as behind the plate in
both years and threw out only 8 of 36 base stealers in 2008. He
made the GCL roster for 2009, but only played in about a third of the
team's games. He caught half of those and split the others between first and DH. He hit well
enough, but he was a little old for the GCL. He may settle
in as an organizational catcher.
