Hernandez settled in a long time ago as a AAA catcher.  He's turned into a decent hitter with good plate discipline and not much power.  He's good defensively.  Going into the 2007-08 off-season, the Pirates needed to stock their AAA and AA catching corps from scratch with veterans.  Aside from re-signing Milver Reyes, Hernandez was their first step.  He'll probably share time behind the plate at Indianapolis with Raul Chavez and Carlos Maldonado, and could get called up if an emergency arises.
