The Pirates signed Perez as a minor league free agent.  He's never shown much with the bat, except during his brief playing time in 2007.  He apparently missed much of the season due to injury.  Perez obviously doesn't take many pitches.  He was assigned to Altoona and expected to be the regular, but got hurt and missed most of the season's first half.  Steve Lerud's promotion then cut into his playing time the last two months.  When he played he hit a lot of singles but didn't do much else with the bat.  He's good defensively and threw out 38% of would-be base stealers, although that dropped to 18% in his limited playing time in 2009.  Perez re-signed for 2009 and returned to Altoona as the backup to Lerud.  He ended up playing sparingly, getting only a little over a hundred at-bats, including a brief stint in AAA.  When he did play at Altoona, his hitting actually improved as he showed a little more power and better patience.  He'll be a free agent again in the fall.
