Baseball America rated Parry as the second best prospect in the Dakotas, which essentially meant that he had a chance to get drafted.  BA thought he had the arm strength and athleticism to catch.  He played catcher, outfield, and third at South Dakota State, although in 2007 he was primarily a DH.  He played two years in JC ball before going to SD State, where he was an academic All-American.  He obviously showed good power in college.  Parry signed after the draft, and was assigned to Bradenton.  He split his limited playing time between LF and DH.  The GCL stint may just have been a tuneup before he started working out at catcher, as the Pirates brought him to major league camp early in spring training to help out with the catching load, and he was catching in minor league camp, as well as playing a little in the outfield.  In 2009 he split the catching duties with Miguel Mendez.  Except for drawing a lot of walks, he didn't do much on offense.  He threw out 24% of opposing base stealers.  The Pirates don't have an obvious candidate to catch at West Virginia in 2010, unless they jump Ramon Cabrera over the NY-Penn League or send Andrew Walker back there, so Parry could get moved up despite his hitting struggles.
