The Nationals drafted Peley in 2005, but he didn't
sign. The Pirates signed him as a DFE after his second JC season. He
had a big power spike in 2007, but keep in mind that Kelly Stinnett once hit 30
HRs in a season for Seminole State. The school, by the way, has turned
out an impressive list of major league players that includes Adam LaRoche, Eric Gagne, Stinnett, Ryan Franklin, Lew Ford, Robert Person, Shane Halter and Eric Cyr. In case you're wondering about the name, Peley is from Montreal, as are Gagne and Cyr. The Pirates converted him to catcher in the GCL and he had a mediocre season offensively, with plate discipline being the biggest problem. He finished the season in a 5-for-33 slump and had a large platoon split, hitting .316 against LHPs (in 38 ABs) and .221 against RHPs. He moved up to State College and was expected to be the Spikes' main catcher, but he missed part of June and July with an injury. He didn't hit at all when he played. He doesn't look like he's ready for full season ball, but somebody has to catch at West Virginia and, unless Andrew Walker and Ronald Pena both return there, the Pirates don't really have anybody who looks ready.
