According to Baseball America, Cabrera signed with the
Pirates after converting to catcher. He's the son of Alex Cabrera, who
became a premier slugger in Japan. Ramon had a good debut in the VSL,
hitting for a decent average with a lot of doubles and good plate
discipline. He opened 2009 back in the VSL, but once the GCL season began
he moved to Bradenton. He continued to hit for average with doubles power and a very good eye at the plate. BA reports that he has a good arm; he threw out 40% and 35% of opposing base stealers in his two years in the VSL, and 29% in the GCL. The catchers at State College struggled badly in 2009, so it's conceivable Cabrera could move up to West Virginia, although the Pirates could also send Andrew Walker back there and assign Cabrera to State College.
