Simon didn't show a lot of power and had only fair plate
discipline in college. He had a very good debut with State College,
hitting for a high average, showing decent plate discipline and a little doubles
power, and stealing a few bases. He was the team's primary CF, although he
played a little in the corners. He didn't hit LHPs well, with a .675 OPS
vs. .872 against RHPs. The Pirates apparently weren't convinced by his
debut, as he opened 2008 as a backup outfielder at Hickory. He ended
up playing semi-regularly due to Marcus Davis' season-ending knee injury.
Simon started off fine in April but then struggled badly for three months,
hitting between .167 and .175 every month. He then went on a spree in
August, hitting
351/398/553 with all of his HRs, and half of his doubles and triples, in barely a quarter of his ABs. He never hit LHPs well, going 13-for-68 with no power against them, so that may be a long-term problem. He played all three outfield spots in 2008, RF more than the others. If the Pirates were more convinced by his August showing than they were by his 2007 showing, he could get a regular spot in the Lynchburg outfield in 2009. If not, he'll probably make it there as a backup.
