Roman was the second player selected by the Pirates from
the Puerto Rico Baseball Academy, the other being
seventh-round pick Benjamin Gonzalez. Like Gonzalez, Roman is a speedy
player with an excellent glove, in centerfield in his case, who
may not be able to hit. Baseball America referred to
him as having no real approach
at the plate. He was, however, the fastest player in
Puerto Rico—Gonzalez was the second fastest. He signed shortly after the draft
and went to Bradenton, where he held his own, showing a little power and
passable plate discipline for a guy with no approach at the
plate. He hit LHPs well, with a .782 OPS, but
posted
only a .569 OPS against RHPs. He played some CF
but mostly LF, probably because the Pirates had a number of
centerfielders at Bradenton. He returned to the GCL to start 2009, this time
playing CF more often. His hitting actually went backward, as he hit for much
less power and fanned more often. He did hit lefties reasonably well again, but was helpless
against righties, posting an OPS of .461 against them. Given the lack
of progress, Roman may not return.
