Saukko played the outfield his first year in junior
college, pitching two innings, but the Pirates announced him as a pitcher at the
draft. This wasn't completely bizarre, because Colorado drafted him as a
pitcher in 2007, following his
senior year in HS, and didn't sign him. As a
hitter, he's very fast and simply tries to serve the ball into left field.
As a pitcher, well
. . . who knows. The Pirates signed him
in late June and sent him to
the GCL, where he played mostly center and some left, so I guess he's an outfielder until further notice. He didn't hit much and had no extra base hits, although he drew a lot of walks. He went to State College in 2009 and played sparingly, being used in all three outfield positions. He hit even less and stopped drawing walks, and continued striking out a
lot for a guy with no power. If he's still around next year it'll likely be in short season ball.
