Webster was a football star in HS, which accounts for him not going sooner in the baseball draft.  He ranked as the White Sox #3 prospect going into 2003, then was traded for Carl Everett.  He gradually slipped in Texas' prospect rankings, from 12th to 21st to 24th over the next three years.  The reason isn't apparent from his hitting #s.  He improved gradually but was moved up slowly just the same.  According to Baseball America, scouts regarded him as raw.  Despite that, he's never had a problem with Ks, although his walk rate has slipped the last several years.  His power hasn't developed as much as was originally hoped.  He runs well and has usually played CF, but he doesn't take good routes and has an average arm.  He obviously took a step backward in 2007, maybe because he was discouraged at being sent back to AA.  He opened 2008 in AA, which is a setback for him. He'll have to compete for playing time with James Boone, Jonel Pacheco, Brad Corley and possibly Jamie Romak, all of whom are headed in the other direction.
