Bozied appeared to be headed for a major league career as a power-hitting firstbaseman when he suffered a bizarre injury in 2004: he tore up his left knee badly during a celebration at home plate after he had won a game with a walkoff grand slam. He was dominating in AAA at the time, but didn't fully recover from the knee injury until 2006, by which time the Padres had released him. Despite good showings in 2007-08, he's never gotten a major league at-bat. He ended up in Taiwan in 2009, but was released. The Pirates signed him after a series of transactions left their Indianapolis affiliate short of players.

Bozied has generally shown a decent walk rate without striking out excessively. He's had a platoon split of about a hundred points over the course of his career. Defensively he's generally played first and some in left, and has been adequate at best. With Indianapolis, he played all four corners, including a handful of games at third. At the plate he started off slowly, posting a .650 OPS in July, but he improved that to .889 in August and .902 in a week of games in September. He struck out a lot overall, but only six times in his last 38 at-bats, so it could be he just needed to get re-acclimated. The Indianapolis announcer stated on his blog that Bozied would like to re-sign with the Pirates. That'd be a good move. The Pirates desperately need power. If they got extremely lucky Bozied could give them a RH-hitting counterpart to Garrett Jones.
