Broadway was a solid hitting prospect for the Expos/Nationals seemingly forever, usually showing good power and a willingness to take pitches.  He's had a moderate platoon split, with an OPS about 80 points higher against RHPs over the last four years.  His big partial season in low A in 2003 is probably an example of why advanced college hitters torching that level can't be taken too seriously, but he was making good progress until a knee injury derailed him in 2005.  Luck hasn't generally been with him.  Broadway probably would have gotten a chance to play for the Nats in 2006 when Nick Johnson broke his leg, but he dislocated his shoulder diving for a ground ball in August that year.  His hitting has tailed off since then.

The Pirates signed Broadway to a minor league contract for 2009.  Although he has a good glove at first, Indianapolis at various points was overloaded with firstbase types who rated higher on the depth chart, including Andy Phillips, Garrett Jones, and Steve Pearce.  Broadway pretty much cratered with the bat, though, and also spent time on the DL, so he ended up playing only sparingly, splitting his time between first, left and DH.  He wasn't helped by a .130 average against LHPs.  He's not likely to return in 2010.
