The Pirates drafted Benoit as a draft-eligible sophomore. He's very well traveled, having been at the University of Oklahoma in 2004, then moving to Grayson Community College after struggling there. He got hurt at Grayson and pitched little, but the Phillies still drafted him. At Oklahoma State, he was the third starter, but certainly improved on his 2004 performance. The Pirates regarded him as having an average curve and a fastball with good life, and when they drafted him said they thought he could be a back-of-the-rotation starter. His fastball tops out at about 90.
Benoit went to Williamsport after
signing and struggled, mainly due to poor control. He made a lot of
progress at Hickory in 2007, though, fanning over a batter an inning and posting
a respectable 1.28 WHIP. Oddly, LH batters hit .280 against him and RH
only .229. Benoit was the only real bright spot on a terrible Crawdads
staff. He moved up to Lynchburg in 2008 and, to put it mildly, the wheels
came off. He simply got bombed unmercifully in nearly every outing.
The Pirates eventually sent him down to Hickory, but things didn't improve all
that much. In fact, he developed a massive gopher ball problem. It's hard to believe Benoit was healthy, but he missed only a little time due to injury. He even pitched on the last day of the season, recording his first scoreless outing in over a month. He'll probably try to put things back together in class A in 2009. Hopefully he'll be able to, as he looked like a good prospect after 2007.
