Cox spent his first two years playing JC ball at Parkland College. He pitched fairly well as a reliever as a junior with Illinois State, with a low K rate, then not very well as a starter, but with a much better K rate. He signed right after the draft and the Pirates assigned him to the GCL. He put up very good numbers there and the Pirates pointed to him as one of the players on a good GCL team with whom they were most impressed, but he was a college senior in a league intended mainly for high school draftees. His one late-season appearance with State College didn't go as well. His fastball was in the mid-80s in spring training, but reached 90-91 during the season. He opened 2009 at West Virginia and couldn't get anybody out. He joined State College when its season opened and was much more effective, although his hits and Ks per inning continued to show he lacks dominant stuff. He should return to West Virginia in 2010.
