The Pirates acquired Hamman in the minor league phase of the Rule 5 draft. He appeared to have settled in as an upper-level swing man for the Tigers. He relies mainly on offspeed stuff and his K rate took a nose dive when he began starting games. He had a decent year in AAA in 2006, but struggled there in 2007 and got bombed late in the season when he was demoted to AA. He opened 2008 in the Altoona rotation, where he pitched well, then moved up to AAA for the last two months. He wasn't as effective there. Surprisingly, he had a strong reverse platoon split in AAA. He became a minor league free agent after the season.
