Livingston threw in the low-90s in high school, but by the time he was drafted his velocity was down to 86-87 and it never recovered. At times as a pro his velocity has slipped to the low-80s. He came to be regarded as a prospect because he won a lot of games (not a good measure) in 2003-05 and because he had outstanding command of his fastball, as well as a curve, change and cutter. He's seldom walked batters throughout his career, but has been hit very hard in the upper minors and the majors. It looks like he simply doesn't have the stuff to succeed at those levels. The Pirates picked him up from Cleveland, no doubt for the ubiquitous "future considerations," for the last week of the AAA season. Due to injuries and callups, Indianapolis was in jeopardy of having to get through its final eight games with just three starters and five relievers. Livingston pitched well in one start, which gave him five minor league teams for 2009, and now he'll be a free agent again. The Pirates could try to re-sign him to replace Corey Hamman as the obligatory upper-minors veteran lefty.
