Macia started off in the organization as an outfielder, but in 2008 the team moved him to the mound and he debuted there with Hickory.  He originally played in the DSL under the name Felix Severino, then was listed by the Pirates as Wanell Macia, then Wanell Severino, and now he's going by Wanell Macia again.  Oddly, although his originally listed age wasn't correct, he turned out to be only a month older.  As an OF, Macia was a singles hitter with no power and no willingness to take a walk.  He was a capable defensive player with a good arm, though, and that obviously prompted the move to the mound.  He spent 2008 in the Hickory bullpen and didn't pitch very well but at least held his own.  The one positive was that he didn't walk many hitters.  He didn't have much of a platoon split.  He should open 2009 with one of the class A teams.  It's hard to see him going anywhere, considering that he's 26 now, but it's impossible to say for sure given the late conversion.
